Introduction
We recommend you not to connect single-phase welding equipment to a generating set, since they have a very bad cos φ (≈0.5). Should you want to do so, make sure your generating set supplies enough power and has an adequate thermal magnetic protection. If you don’t do that, the alternator will suffer serious damage and the capacitor could explode.
There are generating sets specially conceived for shielded metal arc welding (stick welding). You simply have to connect the welding cables and you can start welding.

Types of welding generators

A. AC welding generators: usually for light welding. After having welded, you can switch over to the normal single-phase 230V generating set.
B. DC welding generators: appropriate for professional use. They generate high power intensity. They are available in single-phase as well as three-phase version.
